Artist: Scary Mansion
Album: Every Joke is Half the Truth
Genre: Folk, art rock/anti-folk
Comments: Like Cat Power? Feist? That Anna Ternheim or Emily Jane White from a few months ago? Scary mansion's Leah Hayes has yet another gorgeous voice to add to the pool, and she pairs it well with the Thunderstick, an Appalachian instrument similar in tone to the banjo. Hayes sang on TV On the Radio's "Snakes and Martyrs," and, in addition, her illusrations have appeared in the New York Times and McSweeny's. While this album doesn't exactly distinguish itself as particularly unique, the layers of feedback and intimate sparseness make it lovely.
