Add Date: February 3
Artist: Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears
Album: Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears [EP]
Label: Lost Highway
Genre: Soul, rock
Comments: Black Joe Lewis begins his EP screaming about gunpowder amidst a barrage of horns and drums, guitar and bass, and I'm instantly drawn in. His furious blend of rock and soul, funk and blues seems like kind of departure for the oft-folkin' Lost Highway, but his masterfully raw soul craftsmanship sounds right at home to me. "Gunpowder" is a punch in the face and "Bitch, I Love You" slows things down just a little bit, gives the kids something to dance to (but not until the late night hours on our station). "Cousin Randy" is a profane blues rant, but I won't fault Lewis because it's got character. Play the bookended tracks, 1 and 4.
