Dark Was the Night

Add Date: February 17

Artist: Various Artists

Album: Dark Was the Night (sampler)

Label: 4AD

Genre: Compilation/various genres

Comments: This benefit for the Red Hot Organization, dedicated to raising funds and awareness for HIV and AIDS, is a veritable who's who of independent music. This 9-song sampler includes tunes from Dirty Projectors feat. David Byrne, The Books feat. Jose Gonzalez, Feist & Ben Gibbard, The National (whose Aaron and Bryce Dessner produced the compilation), Bon Iver, Grizzly Bear, Yeasayer, Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings, and Sufjan Stevens. All tracks highly recommended.

As if that weren't enough, the entire 31-song set, available on iTunes, as a double CD or a triple LP, features music from Andrew Bird, Arcade Fire, Beach House, Cat Power, the Decemberists, Kevin Drew, Iron & Wine, Stuart Murdoch, My Brightest Diamond, My Morning Jacket, the New Pornographers, Conor Oberst, Spoon, and Yo La Tengo, among others. And all the tracks are exclusive to this set. Pretty ridiculous. And it's for a great cause!
