Add Date: October 6
Artist: Karen O and the Kids
Album: Where the Wild Things Are (soundtrack)
Label: Interscope
Genre: Freak folk, playground rock
Comments: If you still get misty every time you see the Where the Wild Things Are trailer just like I do, this soundtrack won't disappoint you. True, it's missing the killer version of The Arcade Fire's "Wake Up" that accompanies Max's adventures with the monsters, but with Karen O at the helm, listening to this will transport you to the land of the Wild Things (given the right pair of headphones). Karen O -- the former gf of the film's director Spike Jonze and frontwoman of Yeah Yeah Yeahs, duh -- is joined by her bandmates and members of Deerhunter, Liars, and The Raconteurs, not to mention a whole slew of singing children.

What they all create here is something very special, a fine collection of tunes to accompany Jonze's childhood-by-way-of-indie-hipsterness take on Maurice Sendak's book. Acoustic guitar and pianos provide the common ground for these tunes, but percussion and the odd sorts of noises one might expect from Karen O and her band of misfits give them their charm. Like little kids playing on pots and pans, even the instrumental tracks on here are irresistible. "All is Love" and "Worried Shoes" rank near the top.
