Comments: This four song sampler from Liars is a tasty preview of their upcoming full-length (due out March 9th), which I'm terribly excited for. Their last release was a brilliant, brooding mix of experimental and post-punk, and by the sounds of the sampler, their next cd should be just as creative (it's been called "a dense art-pop thrill from start to finish"). The sampler shows a great mix of heavy and ethereal, with tracks grounded by low, sometimes fuzzy vocals and highlighted by a couple of new elements, including, on the track "Goodnight Everything", horns. The lead off single, "Scissor", starts with clear vocals, sparse instrumentation, and choral harmonies, and gets cut into by some pretty intense thrash (and then plays back and forth between the two)--to great effect. Start with those tracks, numbers 1 and 4.
PS--they'll be in DC on April 14th, Philly on the 16th, Boston on the 17th, and NYC/Bklyn on the 16th and 18th, making for great exam week/spring break concert-going.
PPS--Check out the video for "Scissor"--it's absolutely awesome. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=04domJ7F0oY
