Comments: Shimmering Lights is the third LP from Toronto's The Meligrove Band, and their first for Last Gang (Ten Kens, Metric). Though they've been around for over a decade, this is the first I've heard of the Toronto act, which incorporates horns, strings, organ and more alongside its pedal-friendly guitar-driven sound. The new album is all over the place, from the Broken Social Scene-style bombastic pop of opener "Ghosts at My Back," to the percussion-driven post-punk of "Halflight," to the Built to Spill-leaning "This Work," to the explosive closing track "Eagles." The Meligrove Band dabbles in many different forms, but they perform them all at least adequately--and many of them quite well. Very enjoyable.
