Young Man

Add Date: October 5

Artist: Young Man

Album: Boy EP

Label: Frenchkiss

Genre: Lo-fi alt-folk

Comments: Young Man, aka Colin Caulfield, was signed to Frenchkiss records after gaining some e-success through covers (Deerhunter, Animal Collective) on his YouTube channel. His first EP, Boy, is a collection of warpy, lo-fi folky-acoustic-meets-reverb-and loops tracks. Pitchfork was pretty harsh, saying "Let's be real: This is basically a demo tape"--ouch, but slightly valid in the sense that there's an under-produced, unedited element to the EP which does make it a little less exciting than it conceivably could have been. But it's certainly not bad--along with some Panda Bear-esque vocal stylings (I'll agree with Pitchfork on that), there's a really inoffensive quality to Young Man's sound, which I personally like. Is it the most original or awesome lo-fi-space-folk endeavor? No, but it is surprisingly easy to listen to, the type of release that'll grow on you rather than floor you at first listen. Try "Hands" and "Playtime."
