Comments: EMA is Erika M. Anderson, a devastatingly good guitarist who's previously peddled her wares as a member of Amps for Christ and Gowns. The South Dakota native's solo debut, Past Life Martyred Saints, is a collection of crunching, yet still soulful tunes--Anderson's voice has been compared to early Chan Marshall (Cat Power)--that have been run through a wringer of guitar feedback. Maybe that's an unnatural combination, but it really, really works well. Check out "Milkman", "Breakfast" and the 7-minute jam "The Grey Ship".
