Artist: King Creosote & Jon Hopkins
Album: Diamond Mine
Label: Domino
Genre: Indie pop, electronica
Comments: This seems like a fairly unlikely collaboration--an indie pop artist and a master of ambient electronica--but it most certainly works: Jon Hopkins' rich electronic soundscapes provide a gorgeous backdrop for King Creosote's downcast folk-pop melodies. But this isn't just synth lines versus indie songwriter; these tracks are put together extremely well, with Hopkins' work extending beyond electronics to include piano, harmonium and percussion. And the guest work is terrific, highlighted by harmony vocals from Lisa Lindley-Jones and featuring other occasional surprises, like Leo Abrahams' banjo on album standout "Bubble". (Abrahams and Hopkins also worked alongside Brian Eno on his 2010 issue Small Craft on a Milk Sea.)
Diamond Mine is a compelling record; start with tracks 5, 2 and 3.
