Comments: Nik Freitas has made a name for himself as a collaborator par excellence, mainly from his work on Conor Oberst’s recent solo records and in the touring band for the Danger Mouse/James Mercer project Broken Bells. But he’s a fine songwriter in his own right—Oberst included two of Freitas’ compositions on his Outer South LP—and the latest evidence of that is Saturday Night Underwater.

Between his work with Oberst and Broken Bells, there hasn’t been much time for Freitas’ solo work, but he’s adapted well. A singer/songwriter at heart, Freitas tied Saturday Night Underwater together electronically, with drum machines and synthesizers hovering underneath his vocals and acoustic guitar. The end result is smooth folk pop; check out tracks 2, 8 and 4.
