Artist: Theophilus London
Album: Lovers Holiday
Label: Warner Bros.
Genre: Rap, pop
Comments: Obviously, Theophilus London is trying to change the hardcore, oh too serious image of rap. Lovers Holiday takes this image and completely warps it into a more futuristic, '80s pop sound. However, this attempt at providing reprieve from tradition would be welcome if London did it better. Instead of the two different styles blending well, they sound more discordant and completely out of place. The rapping is sub-par, and the '80s synthesizers and beats are annoying--and the perfect picture of why no one remembers the music from that period favorably. There's also not a memorable hook to be found anywhere on the five tracks. I appreciate the attempt, but it ultimately doesn't work.
