Artist: Wes Swing
Album: Through a Fogged Glass
Label: Shybaby
Genre: Folk pop
Comments: Charlottesville's Wes Swing makes gorgeous folk tunes that land somewhere between Andrew Bird's violin-based pop and Clogs' neo-classical songcraft. Swing has played the violin since he was four years old, and he's an accomplished cellist as well; the musicianship is the most easily recognized feature on Through a Fogged Glass--and that's saying something, because it turns out that he's a fine songwriter and vocalist as well. The strings certainly drive this record, especially on early standouts like "Lullaby" and "Sleeping Moon", but one of the late-album highlights is "song twelve", which simply features acoustic guitar and choral backing vocals.
Swing isn't all that well known outside of Charlottesville at the moment, but one listen to Through a Fogged Glass would be enough to hook anyone in. Start with tracks 2, 3, 12 and 4.
