Comments: If Buddy Holly were still alive, he'd be preparing to celebrate his 75th birthday this September. Of course, his life was tragically cut short in a plane crash in 1959; and although he died at the age of 22, Holly is remembered, rightfully so, as one of the key figures in American rock and roll. The latest attempt to honor his legacy is a sprawling, 19-song compilation of Buddy Holly covers from Fantasy Records, featuring work from legends like Paul McCartney, Lou Reed and Patti Smith, as well as modern acts like Florence & the Machine, Modest Mouse and She & Him.

This is a terrific compilation, with some unexpected turns, like Cee Lo Green doing his best rockabilly voice--and, in fact, it's a pretty good take--on "(You're So Square) Baby, I Don't Care" or Jim James as a '50s pop crooner on My Morning Jacket's version of "True Love Ways". Also try the contributions from The Black Keys ("Dearest"), Fiona Apple and Jon Brion ("Everyday"), Jenny O. ("I'm Gonna Love You Too"), Nick Lowe ("Changing All Those Changes") and John Doe ("Peggy Sue Got Married").
