Album: Audra Mae & The Almighty Sound
Label: SideOneDummy
Genre: Folk pop, roots rock
Comments: There is no mistaking Audra Mae's voice. By counts strong and distinctive, and at times hearkening back to the sound of the earlier half of the 20th century, the vocals of Audra Mae and her backing band The Almighty Sound carry their self-titled album. A move from L.A. to the greatest part of the country, the Midwest, inspired this folk-leaning pop album with roots in country that carries itself quite well on songs like "My Friend the Devil", "Old Italian Love Song", and "Ne'er Do Wells".
The songwriting falters throughout, quite often reducing Mae's new Midwestern home to cliches. But although the songs may be clichéd, at no point is Mae's incredible voice, which unfortunately may be one of the only reasons to listen to the album.
Track 2, 7 and 8 are worth a spin.
