Blasted Canyons

Add Date: May 1

Artist: Blasted Canyons

Album: 2nd Place (EP)

Label: Castle Face

Genre: Rock

Comments: The 6-track 2nd Place EP is Blasted Canyons' followup to their impressive eponymous LP from last summer, and it's another fine showcase for their music, which squeezes elements of psych rock, post-punk and alternative into their muddy garage rock. Lead track and album standout "Get High" sounds like some weird-but-good hybrid of The Replacements and early Interpol--the promoter goes with "The Jesus & Mary Chain meets Wolf Parade"--while songs like "Holy Geometry" and "Liquid Fiend" show off the band's punchy alt-rock.

Overall, Blasted Canyons are a perfect fit for Castle Face Records, the imprint run by Thee Oh Sees' John Dwyer. Spin tracks 1, 3 and 2.
