Comments: In many ways, In the Belly of the Brazen Bull is the comedown record for the Yorkshire band The Cribs. After a pair of major label releases and a stint with The Smiths' Johnny Marr in their band, the three brothers Jarman have spent some time out of the spotlight--and, for better or for worse (though probably for better), Warner Bros. is no longer part of their equation.
But they're hardly phoning it in. The Cribs recorded the LP with two legendary producers, working separately with Dave Fridmann and Steve Albini and laying down still more songs at London's Abbey Road studio, and In the Belly of the Brazen Bull once again features the band's not-quite-patented blend of British rock, indie pop and American alternative.
A solid effort; start with tracks 7, 2, 8, 13 and 4.
