Artist: Flock of Dimes
Album: Head of Roses
Label: Sub Pop
Genre: Avant pop
Comments: Head of Roses, the second LP from Jenn Wasner's Flock of Dimes project, features a set of kaleidoscopic, left-field pop that expertly pulls in elements of art pop, psychedelia, synthpop, and even bedroom folk. Individual tracks take on distinctive styles: the atmospheric pop of "Two" brings to mind artists like Madeline Kenney (whose 2020 LP Sucker's Lunch was co-produced by Wasner) or Here We Go Magic; elsewhere, the slow-burning 6-minute shoegaze jam "Price of Blue" harks back to early records from Wasner's other band, Wye Oak, while tunes like "Hard Way" and "Walking" could best be described as synth-skewed folk pop. Head of Roses is quite the versatile avant-pop record -- and a fine one at that.
