Comments: Toronto's Jason Collett, a member of/regular contributor to Broken Social Scene, returns with his latest LP, Reckon. Collett's solo music mixes classic-sounding guitar rock--Tom Petty has frequently been used as a comparison; you also may remember the '70s rock revivalist act Zeus, which started out as his backing band--with some notes of country, blues, folk and alt-rock.
In that sense, Reckon picks up right where recent albums like Rat a Tat Tat and Here's to Being Here left off. The difference, perhaps, is in the tone, as the new album appears to be a bit more politically charged; standout cut "I Wanna Rob a Bank" stems from Collett's response to the current economic crisis, while the folksy "Don't Let the Truth Get to You" is a critique of politicians and journalists alike.
Vindictive lyrics aside, Reckon is another fine set of tunes from a well-regarded Canadian songsmith. Start with tracks 9, 7, 2 and 14.
