Torres

Add Date: April 21

Artist: Torres

Album: Sprinter

Label: Partisan

Genre: Rock, folk rock

Comments: Torres, the eponymous 2013 debut from Georgia-born, Brooklyn-based Mackenzie Scott, was an impressive collection of minimalist folk-rock songs that put the young singer/songwriter on the map. For her sophomore LP and Partisan Records debut, Scott goes for a full-band sound, crafting what she calls a "space cowboy" album. "I wanted something that very clearly stemmed from my Southern conservative roots but that sounded futuristic and space-y at the same time," Scott explains.

Sprinter was recorded in the UK, including sessions at the Bristol studio of Portishead's Adrian Utley, who played guitar and Moog on the album. And the already-prominent comparisons to PJ Harvey are sure to increase for Torres, as Harvey's longtime rhythm section of Rob Ellis and Ian Olliver rounded out the studio band. These veteran musicians helped Scott, whose songwriting chops belie her age (she just turned 23), flesh out another excellent album of emotionally captivating, folk-laced alt-rock.
