Comments: Spearheaded by Alexander Brettin, Mild High Club is a psychedelic rock/pop band akin to acts such as Ariel Pink, Tame Impala, and Unknown Mortal Orchestra. Back in 2012, Brettin -- who had just moved to L.A. from Chicago -- began touring with Mac DeMarco before striking it out on his own as a musician. In 2015, Mild High Club released Timeline, a more straightforward psych rock record influenced by '60s artists, while Skiptracing, their sophomore release, explores a variety of other sounds to round out the group's repertoire.
While Timeline was under the complete artistic control of Brettin, the musician opened himself to greater collaboration this time around; the shift shows, as "Head Out" finds the group delving into smoky jazz-club territory, while "Chapel Perilous" plays with '70s R&B. Throughout Skiptracing, one finds chill atmospheres, reverberating synths, and lazily rolling guitars which coalesce to form a sunny psych pop record. Ultimately, Skiptracing is a step forward for Mild High Club, one which was made in little over a year; given this solid effort, one can hope for greater development in the future from a group that is slowly making a name for itself.
