Sneaks

Add Date: August 30

Artist: Sneaks

Album: Gymnastics [reissue]

Label: Merge

Genre: Post-punk, art punk

Comments: Sneaks is the solo project of Eva Moolchan, who takes a minimalist approach to punk music while infusing her tunes with darkened dance party vibes. Her debut record, Gymnastics, was originally released in 2015 by French label Danger Records, but is being reissued by Merge this September. With a sound described as "art punk" on Bandcamp, Gymnastics features Moolchan's vocals (which, she says, were inspired by "playing with how we use language and twisting the words of mundane slogans, ads, and repetitive symbols") and bass guitar over steady drum machines.

To get an idea of this minimalist sound, one may look no further than "No Problem", which features an upbeat rhythm, pulsing bass, and Moolchan saying "no problem" several times over the course of the track's 44-second length. While such short songs may be standard among punk purists, Gymnastics consists of 10 tracks which collectively last 15 minutes, giving this "debut" the feel of an EP. Fortunately, Sneaks is back in the studio recording an album which will grace us listeners with additional minimalist punk fun in early 2017.
