Comments: Whether it be promising to release five records in 2017 (The Murder of the Universe is the second so far), self-describing their LP to be “the concept album to end all concept albums”, or just their band name being what it is, King Gizzard seems to be the personification of tongue-in-cheek, and their albums always seem to follow suit. The Murder of the Universe is split like a play with three acts, first telling the tale of Altered Beast, then the epic battle between the Lord of Lightning and the Balrog, before finishing up with Han-Tyumi (an anagram of “Humanity”) and the Murder of the Universe. With 47 minutes being covered by a whopping 21 songs, it’s a nonstop, action-packed roller coaster ride of hard-hitting (often comical) psychedelic rock.
