Comments: Describing themselves as an "emotive garage pop-rock trio... [and a] nod to the '90s riot grrrl in both prose and punk prowess," the Winnipeg band Mise en Scene was formed by Jodi Dunlop and Stefanie Blondal Johnson. Teaming up with bassist Corey Hykawy, the newly-minted three-piece has signed to the terrific Vancouver indie label Light Organ (Louise Burns, Sarah Jane Scouten, JPNSGRLS) for their sophomore LP, Still Life on Fire.
On the record, Mise en Scene mixes upbeat, punk-driven fare with slower-tempo, atmospheric garage pop, landing somewhere in between Best Coast -- there's a strong vocal similarity to Bethany Cosentino -- and Yeah Yeah Yeahs. The punkier numbers ("Waster", "Closer") are perhaps the most radio-friendly, but indie rock-leaning cuts like "Light in the Night", "Guts/Glory", and "Same Hearts" provide a nice balance.
