Comments: Recording under the moniker Free Cake For Every Creature, Philadelphia's Katie Bennett has spent several years crafting what might be termed as quintessential bedroom pop -- in this case, that's meant a sound defined by its lo-fi feel and the artist's hushed vocals. But her latest LP represents a welcome step forward: The Bluest Star features a fuller sound, accomplished through both richer production and the contributions of now-long-term bandmates Francis Lyons and Heeyoon Won. And perhaps most impressively, Bennett pulls this off without sacrificing the intimacy of her previous work. Much like past Free Cake efforts, this excellent LP will fit right in on a playlist that features labelmates Lomelda, Florist, and Double Double Whammy alumna Frankie Cosmos.
