Comments: Significant Changes is the incredible debut release from British Columbia’s Jayda Guy. Recorded and released while Guy was pursuing an environmental toxicology degree in Berlin, the record is a beautiful combination of science and art (“significant changes” was the common phrase used in her thesis). Guy spins disco/dance-worthy jams and beats from heavy environmental themes; my personal favorite track “Missy Knows What’s Up” features vocal samples from Misty MacDuffee, “a biologist with the Raincoast Conservation Foundation, referencing a landmark Canadian court case about the protection of the whales that ultimately led to funding Jayda’s own research and degree.” But the record itself isn’t one big dance party. “Orca’s Reprise” is a dirge, tinged with the sadness that can only come from a contemporary environmentalist, featuring actual samples of the orcas from her thesis. An incredibly rewarding listen.
