Comments: Now that Modern Baseball is on an indefinite hiatus, Philadelphia's Jake Ewald can turn his full attention to the solo project Slaughter Beach, Dog. Recorded at his own studio, The Metal Shop, At the Moonbase takes Ewald's emo inclinations and filters them through a prism of folk, slacker rock, and bedroom pop. Several tracks -- including the standout "Do You Understand (What Has Happened to You)" -- even find Ewald experimenting with spoken-word vocals, to surprisingly good effect. Not quite an indie rock record, not quite a bedroom pop album -- and, indeed, not quite identical to any of the previous three Slaughter Beach, Dog LPs -- At the Moonbase is another nice progression of Ewald's distinctive brand of music.
