Artist: Sun June
Album: Somewhere
Label: Run For Cover/Keeled Scales
Genre: Indie rock, dream pop
Comments: The Austin five-piece Sun June delivers a fine sophomore effort with Somewhere, their first release on Run For Cover. Building off the self-described "regret pop" of their 2018 debut Years -- a style that landed somewhere between minimalist folk pop and dreamy indie rock -- the band takes a few subtle but noticeable steps toward a richer, poppier sound here. But subtlety is, in fact, one of Sun June's calling cards: even with two guitars, bass, drums, and keys, the arrangements always have room to breathe -- and space to highlight some neat flourishes, such as the atmospheric keyboard swirl that closes album standout "Everything I had". Above all, though, Laura Colwell's captivating voice is more than enough to command your attention -- the icing on the cake of this quietly brilliant pop-rock album. Check out Somewhere if you're a fan of Squirrel Flower, Faye Webster, or Andy Shauf.
