Theresa Andersson

Add Date: August 12

Artist: Theresa Andersson

Album: Hummingbird, Go!

Label: Basin Street

Genre: Indie pop, folk pop

Comments: What happens when you cross Swedish pop with New Orleans' great musical traditions? The answer is Hummingbird, Go! from Gotland native and Big Easy transplant Theresa Andersson. At times, the music sounds very Scandinavian, like Acid House Kings, El Perro del Mar or Kings of Convenience--or even like the non-Scandinavian Feist's Let It Die--and at others, it's easy to see why Andersson has worked with Allen Toussaint and shared the stage with Dr. John and the Neville Brothers. According to the album credits, Andersson played "all strings and things like Barq's root beer bottles, saw, wine glasses, high-heeled clogs, drums, slide whistle & slide violin," bringing in just a few musicians to complement her array of wonderful sounds on this homemade record. This is a very impressive effort throughout, but in particular try "Birds Fly Away," "Na Na Na," the Swedish folk tune "Innan du gar" and the jazzy pop song "Japanese Art."
