Comments: From American Songwriter: "Before the Alabama Shakes became the rock 'n soul outfit with a powerfully dynamic female singer that turned 2012 on its ear, Sallie Ford & the Sound Outside got a similar vibe rolling really well in 2011 with Dirty Radio, even if to a smaller amount of fanfare. Now, Ford and her band have increased the quality of their brazen, breathless blend of garage-soul to an even more satisfying level with the new Untamed Beast."
The Alabama Shakes are a good reference point for Untamed Beast, but Ford and her band hit at a rawer rock and roll sound that stretches back all the way to the beginnings of the genre in the '50s. "To me, rock 'n roll isn't a genre, it's an energy," Ford explains. And yet this isn't exactly pureblooded rock, as the music also pulls in in bits of alt-country, folk and jazz; Mashable has described Ford as a cross between "Ella Fitzgerald and Tom Waits".
Overall, Untamed Beast is an raucous, upbeat rock record--and it's a damn good one, too. Start with tracks 1, 13, 12, 5, 8 and 2.
