Artist: Allah-Las
Album: Calico Review
Label: Mexican Summer
Genre: Surf rock, psychedelic rock
Comments: It would appear that having multiple vocalists within a single group is developing into somewhat of a trend as of late. While surf/psych-rock trio Allah-Las may feature one less vocalist than Avers, they still manage to entertain and amaze with their various styles. While the music itself consistently touches on hazy, Western psychedelia, rhythm guitarist Mile Michaud showcases a voice which sounds like a combination of Sameer Gadhia (Young the Giant) and Justin Young (The Vaccines) on the first three tracks and "Terra Ignota." Bringing in Tomas Dolas to play the celeste, piano, organ, and Mellotron on several tracks, Allah-Las presents a well-rounded sound and enchanting arrangements. Overall, Calico Review is a nifty little record which recalls '60s psych-rock while touching on southwestern influences, providing a respectable listening experience.
