Chris Farren

Add Date: September 6

Artist: Chris Farren

Album: Can't Die

Label: SideOneDummy

Genre: Indie rock

Comments: If Joshua Hodges' STRFKR wasn't an electronic act, it might sound a little like Chris Farren's debut solo record Can't Die. Blending gloomy lyrics with upbeat rhythms and danceable hooks, Can't Die deals with mortality and heartache while delivering jammer after jammer. Farren playfully blends elements from various genres; "Say You Want Me" is a punky, surf-rock tune while the relatively lo-fi "I'm Not You" incorporates jazz horns while evoking Conor Oberst. Farren again utilizes horns throughout "Flowers," a lullaby-esque song which deals with loneliness and love while "To Insecurity and Beyond" recalls Owl City. Can't Die twists and turns at Farren's every whim, but where other artists might fail to create anything more than a pastiche of genres, Farren has succeeded in crafting a solidly acceptable album.
