Artist: Low
Album: Double Negative
Label: Sub Pop
Genre: Experimental rock, slowcore
Comments: Longstanding and consistently revolutionary (they’ll be 25 this year) rock group Low are perhaps best known for their pushing of the rock genre envelope, and the subsequent birth of the slowcore subgenre. While every record released by the Alan Sparhawk/Mimi Parker husband-wife combo and friends is solid at the very least, every several years they release something truly spectacular, reinventing themselves and their sound in an amazing fashion. This Double Negative is of these most special works.
Purposefully fragmenting and almost breaking their sound
with static like the best of contemporary noise artists, Low bridge the gap
between the creative and the abrasive. After a quick check and seeing that no,
your speakers/headphones aren’t busted and yes, the opening track “Quorum”
actually sounds like this, Double
Negative can start to be enjoyed. Slipping in and out of this electronica
noise and back to their more signature slow-moving and angelic tracks, the
newest work from Low is incredibly unique and incredibly inspiring. A must-listen.
