Comments: The Devil Makes Three's most recent project, Redemption & Ruin, is an intriguing undertaking. The record comes in two parts, the first is a collection of covers and original songs all relating to the idea of ruin and sin (i.e. lots of drugs, drinking, etc). The second half is a collection of songs all relating to redemption.
While an interesting idea for a concept album, the actual execution is just a touch too on-the-nose. The songs are incredibly literal in their descriptions of the themes, and doesn't leave much room for interpretation. Ultimately, it feels like they're trying a bit too hard to make sure the listener gets the point.
The redeeming portion of this record though (see what I did there?) is the musicianship. It is clear that the musicians in this group is quite impressive and the band sounds incredibly tight on each arrangement. However, its unclear if the redemption of the musicianship can make up for the sins of the lyrics that are just a bit too in your face.
